Before dive into how to apply the first of the 7 Hermetic Principles, known as the Principle of Mentalism, let’s recap its statement:

“The All is Mind, The Universe is Mental” ― The Kybalion.

This Universal Principle is also known as the “Law of Oneness.”

What does this law mean?

First, it says that the All is consciousness, and the universe is pure consciousness. The universe is self-conscious.

This is clearly Plato’s “theory of ideas.” For something to exist, manifest in reality, to become something physical, it must first have been planned.

Everything begins with an idea, which develops through thought, becomes a strategy, and then is executed and manifests in reality.

The simplest example is a house. First, you have the idea of building the house. This idea develops in your mind. How many bedrooms, bathrooms, and so on. Then it becomes a plan, it will be built, and only after the execution will you see a house in front of your eyes.

So in terms of the universe, it works the same way. For a giraffe to exist, someone must have envisioned it, planned and only then did it become real.

Or do you think that such complex biology is the work of chance? Do you believe that out of nothing appeared multicellular beings, complex beings with multiple organs?

And when we talk about human beings, we talk not only about biological complexity but also mental complexity. The human being is too complex for us to simply think that it happened by chance.

Mathematics was not created by humans but instead discovered by us. Considering its complexity, it seems unlikely that it could have been created by chance.

So, there is a mind behind everything. That is what this first law means. Well, how to interpret this law in practice? How to bring it into your life?

For existence to occur, there must be an initial idea. As part of the All, the Universe, your thoughts have immense potential to manifest into reality.

How do you apply the Law of Mentalism in your life?

It’s crucial to be mindful of your thoughts, as they tend to manifest in the physical world.

That’s why we say: “Be careful what you wish for because you might get it.”

So if you keep nurturing your mind with hatred and misfortune, what will you find in life? Hatred and misfortune. You will find negative things in your daily life if you keep promoting negative ideas.

On the other hand, if you nurture your mind with positive things, guess what will you create?

Your ideas start in your mind, and the more you entertain them, the more you believe them. And believing in them, you begin acting in your daily life according to these ideas.

Just as the All is a great mind, you also have a great mind. And all your ideas can be put into practice. So be careful! Focus on good things, and be careful not to nourish your thoughts with bad things.

The goal is to create a positive mental environment because if you build a positive environment, your development will be equally positive. In practice, you will get the results of what you are planning in your brain.

In order to reap good results, you must plan and act accordingly.

The origin of the law of attraction is explained here. The law of attraction arises from this principle where your mind creates your reality. However, I won’t be delving into the details of this law here.

However, it’s about more than thinking and creating instantly. The Law of Mentalism is the first step of a process, like building a house. Luckily, if you have a terrible thought, it won’t happen immediately.

Suppose for long periods you are feeding negative thoughts. In that case, you will end up accomplishing these negative things. And for positive ideas, the exact same thing applies.

Nothing happens overnight. So this is the principle of mentalism applied in practice, and now we come to the second Hermetic Law.
